Make sure you have linux installed
Step 1:
Make sure you have mplayer(1.0 rc2 recommended) and the java runtime environment (jre) 1.6 installed
Further more for remote control support you need lirc to be installed and the lirc daemon (lircd) configured and running
Step 2:
Download the latest SMC package (link).
Step 3:
Create some directory where you want to SMC to be located and extract the downloaded archive to that directory
Open a console window and change to that directory
Step 4:
Now its time to setup your remote control. If you for some reasons dont want to use a remote control you can just skip this step.
Type
java -jar smc4.jar --lirc
The lirc config tool will now ask you to press every key on your remote control needed. to not assign a key (only recommended for seek keys) just press enter on your keyboard.
After the tool is finished it tells where it stored the config file. It should be in the folder where you copied the package to. Otherwise move it there
Step 5:
At this point you might get an overview of the command line parameters. Type
java -jar smc4.jar --help
to get a list. The --program-path parameter might be of use since otherwise the program has to be started in its homefolder.
Now its time to do some basic setup. Type
java -jar smc4.jar --config
Step 5.1:
First you have to setup the paths of the mplayer and java binary on your machine if the standard paths arent correct just click on them and select the appropiate binary.
Step 5.2:
If you havent setup a remote control you might want to configure keyboard controls in the "Controls" Tab.
Step 5.3:
To setup your media paths go to the "Media paths" tab. Here you can add, remove and order your mediapaths. You can add as many as you want. You dont have to split by mediatype. By Default root (/) is configured as media path.
Step 5.4
In the "Mixer" tab you can select what channels you want to be able to control from within the mediacenter.
Step 5.5
In the "Radio" tab you can add additional radio stations. It's wise to test the url's before by typing "mplayer 'url'" since many radiostations encapsulate their streams. It might be hard to get the direct stream url, but mostly its possible.
Step 5.6
Save your settings
Step 6
You are ready to start SMC4 now for the first time
Type
java -jar smc4.jar
Step 7

You can now go the "Online skins" entry and press right to enter the skinbrowser. Select a skin that fits you and press "Enter" to download and load it.
After that you might want to see whether there is a language file for your language (if not english). Select the "Online languages" entry and click through using the left and right buttons. Press enter to download and load a language file
The other options should be self-explaining. Otherwise just try out ;)
